BRIEF:
Internationally known and respected personality (of non-Slavic origin) exploring the unknown world of the Slavs through gastronomy. Eating in the streets, in people's homes and in best restaurants, discovering country's natural beauty and seeking traces of Slavic roots in modern times, all in lively and humouristic manner, learning about and enjoying the diversity we encounter living on the same planet at the same time. Food as a part of the national identity, rooted deeply in the past, represented through ordinary people's habits and the creativity of top chefs, many times not even aware of its origins.
This is not meant to be a simple cooking or travel show, there will be no recipes in the programme however they will be available on the web page. It will be a lively and dynamic exploration of country's history and tradition through the eyes of their inhabitants, providing a guidance to their new »friend«, inviting him at their table, laden with Slavic delicacies. Visually atractive like it was a commercial for a national tourist board, but editorially independent, true and honest in its essence. The message is the one of joy and celebration of life in all its similarities and differencies.
Being a culinary and especially enology enthusiast himself, Pierre Richard could be the One, the enthusiastic explorer of the world he is probably unfamiliar with. His (preferably genuine) interest in finding hidden treasures of Slavic countries, historical background, tasting their best wines and meals while searching for the thing called »Slavic soul«, a mysterious common nominator of the people living on these countries, could be a winning combination.
So, we hope he decides to embark on this unpredictable but also exciting journey to the worlds so near and yet so distant and unknown. He is more than welcome to join us At the table with Slavs.
BACKGROUND
There are 300 million Slavs living in the world, most of them in the 13 countries belonging to the so-called Slavic countries. Sharing similar cultural background, similar language, and nevertheless similar food. Initiated by the international foundation Forum of Slavic cultures, a Slovenian ethnology expert Prof Janez Bogataj for the first time gathered Slavic gastronomy and culinary tradition in one place, bringing them in the spotlight out of anonimity.
Monograph At the table with the Slavs represents a framework, a starting point for the exploration of the natural and cultural richness of the countries included in this circle; it continues where the book started and has the ambition to dive even deeply in the diversity of the Slavic world connecting the Slavs and introducing their heritage to the rest of the world.
Food as a part of national identity, as a kind of »fil rouge«, connecting line – gathering around the table in these rare moments where the time stops for a while and we can enter the lives of our ancestors and on the other hand pass the knowledge to our succesors.
